Baren Digest Tuesday, 18 March 2003 Volume 22 : Number 2162 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Dan Dew Date: Sun, 16 Mar 2003 09:59:53 -0500 To: Daniel Dew Subject: Re: Latin help The phrase your friend suggested, "natus sine mentum", is also another translation of the phrase you wanted. Natus means to be born, sine means without, and mentum means chin. I looked in my dictionary, however, and found out that natus is a form of nascor. Nascor is a verb and natus is used as a noun. So they both pretty much mean the same. Now I can't quite remember where the heck I got the word nasci..... Looking at my dictionary and trying to translate the abbreviations and terms, I'm sure that nasci and nascor are the same word but in different tenses. Now looking at my second phrase I'm not too sure that its correct!! I found the meaning of foris and it means out of doors! But I know sine means without. I had a year off of Latin so I don't remember alot of things but there are some things that still stick. Luckily I'll be taking Latin in high school and learn all this over again!! Here in the baja we are limited and must find ways to use things on hand, it does make doing art more creative! Let us be mature adults and agree to disagree on points of view and still remain loving fellow artists. I agree that our art can be used as an expression of opinion and has been historically. You will get my year of the sheep/goat card in April. What is the reason for art?" Carolyn, that's a nice question to discuss..."what is the reason for art ?" It could fill a book ! I do it cause it pleases me and it fullfills a certain inner desire to make a statement. I would never censor my work regardless of consequences. Speaking as a member, IMO, the list is only sensitive to prolonged discussions on politics & religious issues. Specially statements that preach a certain position over others. Because we are a world-wide community we must all be tolerant of the views of others and remember that the purpose of the list is to discuss and promote woodblock printmaking and whenever possible stay within that content. There is no censorship on this list regarding art or subject matter.....there is no censorship to posting. Please read the guidelines for appropriate posting on the Baren website. Language in postings that have obscene content, threatening in nature or otherwise clearly violate the posting guidelines will be handled by our moderator off-list (Wanda Robertson). Warnings may be given but as many of you know that have had the unfortunate experience to read many unappropriate postings by some of our members.....the forum is very forgiving when handling such departures. thanks...Julio Rodriguez ------------------------------ From: LEAFRUTH#aol.com Date: Mon, 17 Mar 2003 15:17:03 EST Subject: [Baren 21041] Re: Baren Digest V22 #2161 Barbara I sent a check to the address you emailed me and I'm not on the list. Except for one thing...a few years ago I determined that if my art is not funny then it sucks...soooo, what our tenacious ram cannot see is just beyond that ridge is an even higher ridge and beyond that another-higher-and...which isn't that the way life is? just as you surmount the first obstacle you find it only obscured an even bigger one. But thank God we tenacious humans apes are blessed with challenges so that we may continue to evolve as human beings! ;-D Thank you for your encouraging words, it's always nice when someone "gets" what you are trying to say in your art! Consider the work period underway. Currently fifteen have signup but a few more have indicated interest in participating in this format. The more people that sign for this format the smaller the print run required will be per participant to reach our goal of 100 calendars. Due to it's informal nature, signup (for this format only) will remain open until further notice or until colophon info is needed. You will send your 4X6" postcard-sized prints to the coordinator (see address below) and after all prints are received we will assemble and ship the calendars. Please note that the last day for the prints to arrive is September 15, 2003. Calendar delivery anticipated for November 1st, 2003. The Postcard calendar will have no theme, it will be "Open". Feel free to explore your preferred subject(s) & season. Orientation can be either horizontal or vertical. Please do not send in oversized prints as they won't fit the pre-printed months and will have to be trimmed or returned at your expense. Stick to the 4X6" paper size or as close as possible. Avoid extremely heavy papers. You can send in batches of different prints if you like as calendars will have a balanced mix. Month or season preferences will be honored based on signup order. A colophon info page will be made available for you to enter print/artist information. I will send monthly reminders to everyone in this group. You will receive a free Postcard Calendar in return for your contributions. Remaining calendars will be sold thru the Barenmall with funds going to cover operating costs for barenforum.org. Any prints unsold will be returned to the artists. While the minimum number of prints to send is 35, ideally we would like to make close to 100 calendars (that's 1200 prints total !). To reach that goal we can either get more people to signup or we can each send in more than 35 prints. If we endup with 24 participants it comes to about 50 prints per. Address to ship the Postcard calendar prints: Julio Rodriguez 3801 Dobson Skokie, Illinois USA, 60076 Additional info from the website: http://barenforum.org/calendar/ "For the Postcard-calendar, participants will send in small-sized (4X6") prints which will be attached to a pre-printed calendar form (approx. 7 X 7"). The calendar pages will be printed on quality stock and be loose (not bound). The calendar will come with an upright stand for table or desktop display. Prints will vary from calendar to calendar. Edition size is left up to participant (minimum 35 prints). Participants in this format will receive back only one of this type of calendar." Any questions can be posted to calendar#barenforum.org or to the general list. thanks.....Julio Rodriguez ------------------------------ From: Myron Turner Date: Mon, 17 Mar 2003 21:08:09 -0600 Subject: [Baren 21044] Is there anyone in the baren group who lives in Philadelphia and might be able to take responsibility for framing a print for me to be delivered to the Print Center? I will pre-pay all the costs. The print was supposed to be there 3 days ago, but because of a mix-up at the Print Center I didn't learn about it until today and there's now some question as to whether I will be able to get it there in time--because not only will have to get it framed but I will have to have a container/crate made to send it in, since it's a fair sized print.
